According to Microsoft this can't be done, so I created a new entity to mirror the subject entity and set up an ETL job to keep it up to date. I'm able to create a lookup to my new entity. Because the subject has a hierarchy and a normal CRM lookup wouldn't give me the tree structure that's in the subject search, I built the subject parent levels into each row of my new entity as category levels, and I show these on the lookup screen. It's not as nifty as the normal subject lookup with its tree-structured drilldown, but it's better than making users cut and paste subjects from cases.
